RCB Honour Stampede Victims With Armbands and Empty Seats

Royal Challengers Bengaluru return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday carrying a weight far heavier than any scoreboard pressure. Their IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad will double as a solemn tribute to the 11 fans who perished in the stampede outside the ground on June 4 last year — a tragedy that followed the franchise's maiden title triumph and cast a long shadow over the celebration.

RCB confirmed that players will sport practice jerseys bearing the number 11 during warm-ups before switching to black armbands for the match itself. Eleven seats inside the stadium will remain permanently unoccupied — a haunting, visual reminder of the supporters whose passion for the franchise cost them their lives. The club described the victims as members of the "RCB family" in an emotional statement released ahead of the game.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium itself has undergone a dramatic transformation since the disaster. Declared unfit in the aftermath, it lost hosting rights for Women's ODI World Cup fixtures and was bypassed entirely for the 2027 T20 World Cup. The Karnataka State Cricket Association worked through a checklist of safety upgrades recommended by police, fire, PWD, and medical authorities before a committee led by Maheshwar Rao green-lit the venue. Karnataka Home Minister G Parmeshwara cleared the ground for IPL duty in March, with a reduced capacity of 33,000 spectators.

On the cricket front, the contest pits RCB skipper Rajat Patidar against SRH captain Ishan Kishan, with Virat Kohli's return to his fortress guaranteed to crank up the emotion inside a ground that has never lacked for it. But before a ball is bowled, a city and a franchise will pause to remember the ones who never made it home.
